16世纪初，意大利探险家Amerigo Vespucci-亚美利哥•维斯普奇首次详细描述“新大陆”，被视为美洲大陆的发现者，美洲即称为America-亚美利加。1776年，托马斯•杰斐逊起草《独立宣言》时在抬头将新国家的名字标注为 United States Of America-＂亚美利加（或美洲）联合国家＂，即美利坚合众国。
